How To Draw A Chick
This quick sketch tutorial will show you how to draw a chick in just a few simple steps.
All you need to start is a piece of paper, a 2B pencil, an eraser and you're good to go!
As we all know, chicks are fluffy little characters and they are light yellow in color. A chick is a baby chicken.
Assuming you have seen a chick, let's say you are trying to do a chick drawing from memory. Here's an illustration to show you a simple memory trick.
Please excuse my rough examples, I had to make my lines dark for the purpose of this demonstration. (You will need to use light lines.)
I did individual drawings for each step of this exercise, so I apologize that they are all different sizes.
Drawing From Memory
Ok, you ask yourself, how to draw a chick? Follow this simple process and adapt this idea to all drawings from memory.
- Draw 2 circles overlapping each other.
- Using strokes to represent feathers, join these circles together.
- Add the wing.
- Add the beak about half way down the head circle.
(Draw a line out from within the circle, then create the beak.) - Nearly finished!
The circle for the head should sit slightly to the right.
The circle that represents the body should be more oval than round.
At this stage, it's a good idea to erase where the 2 circles overlap.
If you like, you can add in some lines to give extra "body" to the chick.
This is from your memory, so let your lines flow!
Just draw a curve from the middle of the body circle to the outside.
Join the top side of the wing to the body with some light strokes.
Draw in the eye, like the shape of a seed.
The eye sits just in from the top of the beak.
Just add the legs.
This is easy, it's side on so we only draw one leg and just show a couple of toes from the other foot.
Extend the body down to meet the legs.
I've left this final sketch as a rough draft.

To finish off, sketch in some carefully placed feather lines, here and there.
Remember to keep your lines light so you can erase the ones you don't want to keep.
On the other hand, if you want to, you can leave all of your lines in, it gives this little sketch a lot of character.
